The traces of the existence of this ancient Roman city date back to the 6th century BC At the time of the dramatic eruption, in 79 AD, Pompeii had about 11,000 inhabitants and was considered of great importance for the Roman Empire. Several emperors and aristocrats had their holiday villas in that area, while the merchants operated businesses with the locals. This lively place was buried under several meters of ash within a few hours. Centuries later, in 1748, Pompeii came to light when the Bourbons ruled Naples. The discovery was greeted with enthusiasm as it added great wealth to the kingdom and inspired the neoclassical movement in Europe. Departing for the Naples and Pompeii tour crossing the Autostrada del Sole in a southerly direction, we can admire the green countryside and the Castelli Romani. Halfway through, we will see the Abbey of Montecassino, famous for the great battle of World War II. We descend towards the port of Mergellina and walk along the seafront to reach the Santa Lucia district, antLasciamo the city along the fertile valley of Vesuvius that borders the towns that connect Naples and Pompeii: Ercolano, Torre del Greco and Torre Annunziata. Once in Pompeii, lunch will be served. In the afternoon, always accompanied by our guide, we begin the archaeological walk in the ancient city (about 2 hours). Buried by a blanket of ash and lapilli due to a sudden eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, Pompeii came to light after almost 1700 years and as if by magic the everyday life of an ordinary day in the early imperial age remained crystallized in its gestures, in its secrets, in the panic of the last moments. During the excursion we will visit an ancient cameos and coral factory, a typical expression of local artists since the Greek era. At the end, we begin the return journey that will end our Naples and Pompeii tour and after about 3 hours we will be back in Rome. Return near the hotel.
